Why Your Candle Tunnels And How To Fix It?

Candle tunneling is one of the most common candle problems — and one of the most misunderstood.
If your candle burns straight down the middle, leaves wax on the sides, or looks uneven, don’t worry: it’s not ruined. With the right care, you can fix it and prevent it from happening again.

In this guide, we’ll explain why candle tunneling happens, how to fix an unevenly burning candle, and simple candle care habits to enjoy a clean, long-lasting burn.

What is candle tunneling?

Candle tunneling happens when only the center of the candle melts, leaving solid wax around the edges.
Instead of an even wax pool, the flame creates a “tunnel” — reducing burn time and wasting wax.

This issue affects soy wax candles especially, because natural wax burns differently than paraffin.

Why your candle burns unevenly?

1. The first burn was too short

The most common cause of tunneling is extinguishing the candle too early during the first burn. Candles have a “memory.”

If the wax doesn’t melt all the way to the edge the first time, it will continue burning unevenly.

2. Wick is too short or too long

An untrimmed wick can cause:

  • weak flames (too short)
  • smoking and uneven burning (too long)

👉 Ideal wick length: 5–7 mm before each burn

When we give a candle time, it gives light back in balance.

3. Drafts & Airflow

Burning a candle near:

  • open windows
  • air conditioners
  • fans

can cause the flame to lean and melt wax unevenly.

4. Natural wax behavior (especially soy wax)

Soy wax burns slower and cooler than paraffin.
This is normal — but it means proper candle care matters more.

How to fix a candle that burns unevenly?

Method 1: The foil trick (best & safest fix)

This is the easiest and most effective solution.

How to do it:

  1.  Wrap aluminum foil loosely around the top of the candle
  2.  Leave a small opening above the flame
  3.  Burn for 1–2 hours
  4.  Let the wax melt evenly to the edges

✔️  Fixes tunneling
✔️  Saves leftover wax
✔️  Works for most candles

Method 2: Extend the burn time

If tunneling just started:

  • Burn the candle until the wax pool reaches the edges
  • This can take 2–4 hours, depending on size

Rule of thumb:
Burn 1 hour per 2.5 cm (1 inch) of candle diameter

Method 3: Adjust wick care

Before the next burn:

  • Trim the wick to 5–7 mm
  • Remove charred wick pieces
  • Center the wick if possible

Proper wick care helps the candle burn evenly and cleanly.

How to prevent candle tunneling in the future?

✔️ Always allow a full melt pool on the first burn
✔️ Trim the wick before every use
✔️ Burn candles away from drafts
✔️ Avoid burning for less than 1 hour
✔️ Follow candle care instructions — especially for soy wax candles

Are uneven candles a sign of poor quality?

Not necessarily.

High-quality, natural soy wax candles are more sensitive to:

  • burn time
  • airflow
  • wick care

This is normal and part of working with sustainable materials.

At Dankbar, we believe candle care is part of the ritual — slowing down, paying attention, and creating mindful moments.

FAQ

Candle tunneling happens when the first burn is too short and the wax doesn’t melt to the edges, causing uneven burning.

Yes. Using the foil method or extending burn time can help melt leftover wax and restore an even burn.

Soy wax burns cooler and slower than paraffin, which makes proper candle care especially important.

Burn your candle long enough for the wax pool to reach the edges — usually 1 hour per 2.5 cm (1 inch) of diameter.
