The 5 Biggest Mistakes Beginners Make

And how a few small rituals can turn any candle into something truly special

Lighting a candle is one of life’s quiet pleasures. A soft flame, a gentle scent, a pause in the day. But when a candle starts to tunnel, smoke, or lose its magic too quickly, it’s rarely the candle’s fault — it’s almost always about how it’s used.

At Dankbar, every candle is hand-poured with intention. And we’ve learned that just a few mindful habits can transform the entire experience.

Here are the five mistakes we see most often — and how to turn them into beautiful rituals.

1. Ending the first burn too soon

The very first time you light your candle, you are setting the tone for its whole life.

If you blow it out before the melted wax reaches the edges, the candle will begin to tunnel — burning only in the center and leaving precious wax unused on the sides.

The ritual:
Let your candle burn until the entire surface has melted, usually 1-3 hours. Think of it as giving your candle a strong, balanced foundation.

2. Forgetting to trim the wick

A long wick creates a large, restless flame that produces smoke, soot and uneven melting. It can also make your candle burn too fast and too hot.

The ritual:
Before every burn, trim the wick to about 5 mm. This creates a calm, steady flame and a cleaner scent experience.

3. Burning for too little… or too long

Both extremes shorten the life of your candle.

Burning for only a few minutes prevents an even melt. Burning for too many hours overheats the wax and damages the wick.

The ritual:
Let your candle burn for 2 to 4 hours at a time. Long enough to melt evenly, short enough to stay healthy.

The biggest candle mistakes are often simple habits that are easy to fix.

4. Blowing out the flame

Blowing out a candle pushes smoke and soot into the wax, which can change how it smells and looks the next time you light it.

The ritual:
Gently dip the wick into the melted wax or place the lid over the flame. This keeps the surface smooth and the scent pure.

5. Not storing your candle with care

Sunlight, heat and dust slowly damage candles. They fade the fragrance and change the texture of the wax.

The ritual:
Store your candle in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight, with the lid on. This protects both the scent and the beauty of the candle.
